blueberry cupcake

Blueberry Muffin. Colored pencils.

This was the one that I had started 2 days ago, but quit halfway through. I didn't have the right pencils/colors to do it how I wanted to. This one isn't very good IMO, but at least I finished it. It looks so flat. The frosting doesn't look very good either. Whatever :D

  1. I like it! The more I produce, the more I understand the term, 'tortured artist'! We can be terribly critical of our own work. I know of one artist I heard speak that made me laugh in empathy when he declared, 'I hate this!' over a gorgeous painting he had done of a horse. As for your feeling that it's too flat, I don't agree. But, that introduces the subject colored pencil artists should know. In a nutshell, once you introduce color, it becomes a little trickier to introduce tone.
We'd all say blue is darker than yellow. But, a drawing will look flat if we believe that. We have to make that blue darker in tone, and/or the yellow lighter to get the desired contrasts. I face that Drawing problem every colored pencil drawing. The drawing will look right until I squint at it, and then I see. I hope that helps!
Also... Extra points for perseverance! Your cupcake looks very tempting to me! You've effectively given me a craving!

  2. Oh, and one more thing: When I feel my drawing looks flat, I check the tone on my edges. That's when I 'cheat' and exaggerate the darks or light or smudginess of an edge until it looks like I can pick it off a page. I'm so proud of your work! Don't get discouraged. You are doing truly excellently. Keep it up!!

  3. Tortured artist is so right! I'm extremely critical of my work. It's kinda prideful if you think about it. I'm no DaVinci. It's ridiculous to think that I can make everything look as good as the Mona Lisa. Maybe one day I'll be that good, but not anytime soon!

It definitely is harder to get tone down with colored pencils. I could really use 50+ colored pencils at least to get the all the tone I want.

Well I'm glad you like it! It does look a little better to me since I've slept on it. Sometimes if you just put it away and look at it later it'll look a lot better.

I do think I could have gone a little darker on the edges of the cupcake. It's fine though. Thanks!
