lavender

Today after an appointment in Nashville, I dropped by the amazing Dose. Dose is a cafe that also serves a wide selection of full-leaf teas and in-house baked goods. The ambiance is wonderful. It's light, breezy, but still cozy. Very spacious. I grabbed a Ginger Latte and a Ginger Green Tea Muffin and plopped down in a booth, turned on my iPod, and began to draw this beautiful dried lavender that was on the table. What an amazing time! The lighting in the cafe is perfect; light enough to draw. The latte was fabulous! I had it topped with whipped cream and cinnamon, and it was an awesome indulgent treat, but not too naughty. I grabbed my cream pencil and began to draw, nibbling on my muffin, sipping coffee, and enjoying life, while Regina Spektor was narrating this wonderful scene (on my iPod :D). Such a fabulous afternoon.

I'm mostly satisfied with this picture. It seems like it might be lacking depth to me. This isn't exactly how the lavender looked like; it's my warm portrayal of such a lovely scene. The bright blue in the flowers wasn't exactly what I was going for. I couldn't seem to get a good purple. Sometimes it's just best to have a purple pencil, instead of trying to mix to create it. The shadow was tricky to make. The flowers didn't actually have a shadow, because they weren't right up against the wall. Some of the flowers that I wasn't drawing were up against the wall, so I drew inspiration from their shadows. I this it's decent, but not the best.

Hopefully tomorrow's picture will be good. I have a guitar lesson, so I'm praying that I'll have time to squeeze the drawing in somewhere. Life gets so much faster when you get older!

Thanks for reading my unconstructed, gushy little rant. I worry 'bout myself sometimes...

  1. I so prefer an expressionistic piece that's born of a glorious moment than technical perfection. There is geometric truth, and emotional truth.
I love your story and your lavender. Did you get those Faber-Castell Aquarelle pencils back? Perhaps there is a purple among them?

Love your story and your work.
BTW, my purple looked blue in the drawing of my photo... Maybe it's a camera thing,

  2. Expression always trumps technique. I'm glad you like it. I think I'll like it more tomorrow, after I sleep on it.

I'm going to ask my mom about the pencils, but my guess is that I won't be able to get them. Of the few that I have, I don't remember a purple being in there. I have a really dark violet in my Crayola set, but it wasn't of much use in my picture. I should go buy a few Prismacolors of the colors I need most.

  3. P.S. Yes, your purple looked very blue in the picture. I wouldn't think you would draw a royal blue eggplant. I figured it was your unfortunate lighting altering the color.
